Christianity and Easter

In a break from our usual banter, we would like to take this time to celebrate Christianity and Easter Sunday.

Christianity was introduced to North America as it was colonized by Europeans beginning in the 16th and 17th centuries. Founded by Jesus Christ approximately 2,000 years ago, Christianity is one of the most influential religions in world history.

According to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, in 2010 there were 2.18 billion Christians around the world, nearly a third of the global population. The top 3 largest national Christian populations:
  • US - 246,780,000 (79.5% of the Population)
  • Brazil - 175,770,000 (90.2% of the Population)
  • Mexico - 107,780,000 (95% of the Population)
Since Christianity has always been and still is the most influential religion in America, why is it that our leaders continue to side with the minority on religious freedoms to the exclusion of the majority. We should be able to express, demonstrate and display our religious heritage without persecution from those we pay. Each holiday we are forced to remove our symbols of love or faith from public domain that exist on our tax dollars. Prayers and bible studies are limited or excluded in places that survive on our tax dollars.

ACLJ David French: “.....it’s clear that – particularly on college and university campuses – we have seen a significant rise in attempts to silence Christian organizations by the misapplication of nondiscrimination laws. One of the most strident examples: the misuse of the Establishment Clause to attempt to ban any mention of God from historical markers, monuments or even museum exhibits,” French says. “This represents an effort to whitewash God from American history and change our national identity."

Liberty Institute Founder Kelly Shackleford says government, from schools to social programs, is the ringleader. “There are children being prohibited from writing Merry Christmas to the soldiers, senior citizens being banned from praying over their meals in the Senior Center, the VA banning the mention of God in military funerals, numerous attempts to have veterans memorials torn down if they have any religious symbols such as a cross, and I could go on and on. The Obama administration has been very hostile, from the HHS mandates to the VA case to many, many more; but it has been getting worse and worse each administration,” Shackleford says. “Government always tries to increase its power, and freedom has been fading in the process. It has been a steady and consistent.”

To all this we say: Celebrate openly and with pride on the days for Baptism of Jesus, Three Kings Day, St. Anthony's Day, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, All Saints Day, All Soul's Day and....MERRY CHRISTMAS! These are all Happy Holidays, but they have real names and meanings.

Amen.
